Schisandra chinensis

Schisandra chinensis

Schisandra chinensis

Detailed Description

Schisandra chinensis
One of the 50 Fundamental Herbs of Traditional Chinese Medicine, schisandra is said to increase and balance body energy or chi. A deciduous climbing vine, the sweetly-scented pink and white flowers emerge April to May, and clusters of bright red berries ripen August to October. Schisandra is classified as an “adaptogen,” a substance that helps the body adapt to stress. Taking schisandra as a daily supplement reportedly helps to improve concentration and mental clarity, reduce fatigue (without the jitteriness of caffeine), promote longevity and stamina, improve sleep, elevate mood and emotional stability, as well as beautify the skin and act as a sexual tonic. Hardy to zone 4, schisandra grows best in well-drained soils in full to partial sun. Since it's a vining plant, we recommend growing it on a trellis. This member of the Magnolia family is believed to have originated in Manchuria. Our schisandra plants come from the farm of Dr. Tso-cheng Chang, a renowned schisandra grower who has promoted it as a highly beneficial berry well-suited to organic gardening practices. We are selling one 4" pot, which has two plants in the pot for cross pollination.

Hardy Zone 4 and higher for outdoors.

Full or partial sun, grows to 4-6' in container, minimum temperature indoors 30°, Spring bloomer.
